Luckily, I had a very different experience than Dan E. The management company who owns my apartment complex had my car wrongly towed from my own parking spot and refused to pay for it. As a struggling college student, I was extremely upset because I didn't have the time or money required to get my vehicle, nor did I have anyone to drive me to pick it up. Being stressed from final exams, graduate school admissions, entrance exams, etc., having my car towed almost sent me over the edge. Anyways, I called Collier's, and Mike (who I'm assuming is the owner) was extremely kind and helpful. He sent someone to pick me up so I could get my car, and a very kind, burly gentleman (I wish I had caught his name) arrived within 10 minutes from me hanging up the phone with Mike. I had obviously been crying from frustration and from the lost time and money, and the wonderful gentleman was so nice and was very empathic, which was very comforting to me. When I arrived at Collier's, Mike was very caring and understanding. My bill was lower than expected, but from habit, I asked if they gave a military discount. Mike informed me that he already gave me a substantial discount (which was verified by my wonderful escort). He wasn't even going to tell me that he discounted my price, which really indicates pure altruism and kindness. All in all, Collier's made a very difficult, frustrating, and stressful situation much better, and I am very grateful for that. Getting your car towed is never a fun process, but if you arrive with a good attitude, then I think that will make the experience a little better. There's no sense in blaming the towing company--they're only doing their jobs. P.S. They have a really sweet rescue doggie, so bring treats if you ever have your car towed :)

Colliers towing has a reputation for predatory towing. Recently Collier wrongfully towed my daughter’s car from a parking lot in downtown Charlottesville even though she had purchased a parking ticket and had it clearly displayed inside her car. When she called Colliers to try to resolve the issue, they insisted on her paying $145 in cash to get her car back. Throughout our efforts to recover the car, they were rude, abusive and did everything they could to try to intimidate my daughter including calling the police when she asked too many questions. After some research, I found the following facts: 1) Virginia regulations governing the Towing Business (24VAC27-30-100. Unprofessional conduct) state that they must “Accept at least one of two nationally recognized credit cards “ and 2) Code of Virginia 46.2-1233.1 ‘Limitation on charges for towing and storage of certain vehicles’ states that “No charge shall be made for storage and safe keeping for a period of twenty-four hours or less” (My daughter was illegally charged a $25 Parking fee). Virginia Tow companies are regulated by the State of Virginia. If you feel like you have been treated unfairly, please file a complaint with the ‘Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Towing and Recovery Operators’. They have a complaint form that can be downloaded from http://www.btro.vi.virginia.gov/. Stand up for your rights and help stop these predatory towing practices.
