      Don't Waste Your Money

Dealing with Ultimate Fitness East in Riverhead has been one of the most insulting experiences of my life. The clueless, unprofessional, disorganized, lackadaisical staff will promise you anything to get your money, then lie and even contradict themselves when confronted. 10 days ago, I walked into Ultimate Fitness in Riverhead with questions. I am a first-time gym-goer, and I asked the young man behind the counter if I should be concerned with my lack of experience with the equipment before purchasing a month's membership at $53. Eager to get my money, the kid assured me that a new membership comes with a "new member orientation" covering the basics of the gym use and equipment (also see their website.) Satisfied with this, I paid cash for my membership, and the next day I phoned to arrange my "by-appointment-only" orientation. When I phoned, an appointment was made for me with "Damien" at 10AM on Saturday. I arrived ten minutes before the appointment, advised the kid behind the counter that I had an orientation scheduled, changed into appropriate work-out clothes, and waited. And waited. Only after I enquired again was I told that "oh, no one told Damien that he had an orienation with you. Maybe you could come back another day?." After having driven from Greenport, I could still accept that these things do happen. The counter attendant allowed me to go back into the locker room, change, and I was JUST heading out the door when he said "oh, did you still want that orientation?" No, I was already leaving. I had told him I was leaving, and he watched me go to the locker room to pack up. Fine again. I called THREE times during the past week to try to arrange this orientation AGAIN. All three times, "Jim" answered the phone, and told me he couldn't help me because he was new. He was new on Wednesday, new again on Thursday, and new again on Friday. (gee, how many phone calls do you have to get about THE same SUBJECT before you make sure you have an answer for the next person who calls?) Anyway, while never offering to find out and call ME back, I was finally told to "call back in an hour" tonight. And, when I called, I was told that you only have 24 hours to recieve your orientation!! THIS was not MY fault! When I asked for a manager, I was given a cell phone number for a man named Phil who's outgoing voicemail greeting is something about a pool service. All I can say is, there was no one in the gym the first time I went, the locker room makes the locker room in my former high school look state-of-the-art, and the ignorance, laziness, and double-talk of the staff is disgusting. This isn't the YMCA - I paid a LOT of money for something I can't use because I was lied to. Please, go to Planet Fitness, go to Curves, work out at home, or just throw your money in the Long Island Sound, because that's what I should have done. I'll be happy when I drive down Route 58 and see Ultimate Fitness out of business. Don't waste your time or your money.
