Smith has been in practice for more than 30 years. He began his practice as a law clerk for Judge Jack L. Ogg of the Arizona Court of Appeals and is a former trial attorney for the United States Government. He served as a judge pro tem for the Maricopa County Superior Court for more than fifteen (15) years. He is a member of both the Arizona and Illinois State Bar Associations, as well as a member of the Federal District Court Bars in Arizona, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. Mr. Smith is a cum laude graduate of the DePaul University College of Law in Chicago, Illinois, where he was an editor of the law review and a member of the National Moot Court team. He received his undergraduate degree, summa cum laude, from U.C.L.A. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Mr. Smith is an estate planner. As such he prepares wills, revocable living trusts, irrevocable trusts, living wills, and powers of attorney. He also handles probate matters, will contests, and guardianship proceedings. Mr. Smith also represents clients in civil litigation matters and appeals. He represents clients in a large variety of civil disputes including business and contract litigation, legal malpractice and commercial litigation. He handles both jury and bench trials. Further, Mr. Smith handles all types of domestic relations matters, such as divorce, legal separation, annulment, child custody and support, spousal maintenance (alimony), contempt, premarital contracts, property settlement agreements and modifications. A significant aspect of Mr. Smith’s practice is appellate litigation. He handles appeals in civil, family law and juvenile matters. In addition to traditional appeals, Mr. Smith has handled a number of special actions in the Arizona Court of Appeals, as well as Superior Court appeals.
