White table coverings and a stylized French service mark Klay Oven, a popular Indian restaurant at 414 North Orleans Avenue. While most Indian restaurants seem to emphasize an extreme approach to seasoning and flavors, Klay Oven takes a decidedly more tempered direction. Seasonings and spices speak with a clear voice, as it were, without any strident sensibilities in the way the various menu offerings are created. Certainly, diners can find spice; just taste a bit of pickled chutney for a flavor rush. But, by and large, moderation is more the model. Begin with some of the appetizers such as potato filled samosas in a puff pastry crust, or pakora, with ground chick pea flour and vegetables, more or less a deep fried fritter.Soups are the key to understanding a cook's kitchen. At Klay Oven, the mulligatawny, a chicken and lentil broth remnant of Rudyard Kipling's India, brings curry, lemon juice and a touch of cayenne pepper among it's seasonings. It's just one of five soups on the menu. When it comes to entrees, tandoori mixed grill offers tastes of ground lamb, chicken and shrimp. There are several seafood choices as well.
