Contemporary, Earthy, and Authentic Modern Mexican Cuisine!
  • Freshness Balance Creativity
  • Modern Mexican Cuisine
  • Specialty Cocktails
Chef Richard Sandoval's first Modern Mexican restaurant provides a contemporary, earthy, and authentic cuisine and atmosphere. It brings an eclectic, visceral, and festive experience to the Upper East Side. Traditional elements are combined with the colors of modern Mexico. Yellow ochre and terra cotta walls are decorated with classic items such as huipiles, embroidered blouse worn for celebrations, and exvotos, an old practice of painting small tableaus to thank a patron for a miracle. Maya's new dark walnut wood gives it a contemporary feel, which compliments the unique hand carved furniture. Our original cocktails and margaritas are made from the freshest fruits. We feature an impressive tequila list along with an international selection of wines by the glass and bottle. Maya is the perfect restaurant to experience contemporary Mexican cuisine!

Editorial Review for Maya
High-end Mexican that ranks among the city's best.

The Scene
Pastel walls decorated with folk art and glass shelves lined with silverware create a tastefully festive atmosphere. The dining room feels intimate but is actually quite large--nooks and crannies are dotted about everywhere. Service is variable: sometimes excellent, sometimes merely adequate.

The Food
Richard Sandoval creates haute takes on familiar standbys, and invents a few of his own creamy confections, too. In the former category, quesadillas stuffed with cheese and zucchini blossom are soft and crunchy, while mole poblano features unusually complex sauce and boneless chicken tenders spiralled around plantains. In the latter, baked oysters swamped with goat cheese, habaneros and crispy bacon are a gooey treat and perfectly seared scallops chime with halibut, lemon, chiptole, avocado and cilantro blend to create a wonderfully tangy effect. Off notes--like tuna seviche o

The Extras
Maya can host up to 40 guests and create a custom menu.

What to Drink
Maya boasts more than 100 tequilas and a selection of excellent margaritas. Steer clear of the sangria, though; the mix is too heavy on wine.
