 | Editorial Review for Engine Co. NO. 28 |
| Classic, hearty American fare served in an elegant and historical setting.
The Scene This bustling downtown restaurant was once an actual firehouse, built in 1912. Though some fire station accoutrements linger--a fire pole here, vintage photographs there--the room has been gussied up with dark wood and tall-backed booths. It caters to a mixed crowd of theatergoers and meat-and-potatoes-loving Lakers fans.
The Food Hearty and simple, yet elegant, the Engine Company serves traditional American food--the kind that mom would make if she were cooking for a group of well-dressed firefighters. Crisp romaine hearts with Maytag blue cheese is a perfect beginning. A brick of moist meatloaf or pan-fried chicken, both sided by creamy whipped potatoes, are worth fighting downtown traffic for. Save room for a sip of Sweet Dreams--hot milk, brandy and chocolate liqueurs--and a piece of award-winning cheesecake. | Insider Tips | Parking There may be some street parking on Figueroa, otherwise, use the $5.50 valet.
Know Before You Go A free shuttle service is offered to Staples, the Disney Hall, and the nearby theaters. Call ahead to make sure it's running for an event. | View full Citysearch profile Information provided by Citysearch |
