Crispy frites and great steak tartare
L'ancestral is an old school super French restaurant. All the classics are here - soupe a l'oignon, steak tartare, leeks in vinaigrette ect. The food here is consistently good, although I wish they... (gastronomie, 2008-01-15)

Piaf would be at home!
This IS French cooking. Quiet and chic, though no dress code, L'Ancestral is always my choice for a special occasion dinner. Alain, Jacques and Ken are great hosts and the service is formal but not... (rrwineguy, 2007-10-14)

| | Escape culinary mundane and take a journey to the French countryside right in the heart of Dallas. The promise of a true elegant country French meal, moderately priced, with a fine, well-selected French wine and cocktail list is what makes l'Ancestral one of a kind. Outside, a quaint stone patio perfect for open-air dining. Inside, classic crisp earth tone tablecloths, in a softly lit dining room resembling a Country Inn. The daily menu delights any palate with an array of culinary French offerings. Melt in your mouth sweet breads, Steak au Poivre (filet with cracked pepper and cream sauce), Pommes Frittes (french fries) to name a few. Desserts offer up Pot de Creme Carmel, Floating Alian (soft meringue on a creme anglaise) and dark rich chocolate truffle cake. Romantic, quiet, selective. Discover true French neighborhood dining just outside your doorstep today. |
| Editorial Review for L'ancestral Restaurant |
| Casual elegance permeates this venerable country French restaurant nestled in the Knox-Henderson area.
The Scene Loyal clientele have eaten here since 1983, a rarity among Dallas restaurants. Even the original chef and waitstaff are in tact. The dining room displays the grandeur of a decaying country manor and the stone patio is dotted with mature greenery. This is a quiet, informal place where older, moneyed Dallas goes to savor the mellow mood and reliable cuisine.
The Food This isn't the sauce-laden food most Americans think of as French. Simple herbs and fresh ingredients delight the palate. French onion soup is superior, with flavorful broth and smooth cheese. Tender artichoke hearts marinated in garlic and olive oil are ideal starters. Superb entrees include lamb tenderloin sauteed with mint and cognac, or grilled orange roughy with lime-and-dill sauce. Caramel and custard lovers will swoon over pot de crème au caramel. | Insider Tips | Parking Underground parking is available for the entire Travis Walk center. Two-hour street parking is tough on a busy weekend night.
Where to Sit If the weather cooperates, go for a romantic evening alfresco on the patio.
What to Drink Enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail and order the kir royale: champagne with a splash of creme de cassis. | View full Citysearch profile Information provided by Citysearch |
