First let’s begin by defining the word GMO. GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism. Genetically modified foods are foods that come from genetically modified seeds. These seeds have been made in a lab specifically to be able to resist really high doses of pesticides or even produce an insecticide (BT toxin).
For example, 93% of all soy in this country is GMO. The seeds have been made to resist really high doses of Roundup pesticide. Another crop that’s over 80% GMO in this country is corn and corn produces an insecticide called BT toxin. What’s scary about these GMO foods is that the gene inserted into the seeds settles in the DNA of the healthy intestinal bacteria. It actually continues functioning even after a long time the individual has stopped consuming GMO foods.
Main GMO Crops
There are 4 major GMO crops: corn, soy, canola and cotton. If you want to achieve optimum health then you may wish to cut out all of these from your diet, unless they are certified organic USDA. There are other substances derived from GMO foods that you need to watch out for such as: maltodextrin, soy lecithin and high fructose corn syrup. You need to eliminate these from your diet as well as all are unhealthy for you.
The bio tech industry have people fooled into thinking the creation of a GMO seed is a very precise and exact process, but this could be farther from the truth. There is major room for error, not to mention the fact that they are creating a more hardy plant in order to withstand extremely high doses of pesticides and herbicides, which has unknown long-term health consequences when consumed.
Different studies show limited evidence that the consumption of GMO foods can produce: infertility, low birth weight, allergies, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease, amongst many more.
The Scoop on Monsanto
Of course Monsanto, the biggest giant in the GMO world, will assure you that GMO foods are as healthy as organic foods, but it is up to the consumer to find out the facts. Do the research for yourself if you have concerns about GMO food. Look to see where the studies are coming from, who is participating in them.
We have what it takes to make the changes we need in order to prosper and become healthy. If you feel your health would benefit from cutting out GMO foods, look at the Non-GMO shopping guide that was put together by the Institute for Responsible Technology. This guide can help you make the right choices for you and your family.
