We love our pets. In fact, for most pet owners, a pet is as much a part of the family as children and other relatives. And when our animals get sick, we find that we are often willing to spare no expense in order to ensure that they get better. There are plenty of pet insurance companies out there these days, but are the monthly payments really worthwhile? Is pet health insurance the right choice for your furry family member?
There are people on both sides of the pet health insurance debate, and with good reason. While companies offer pet insurance coverage starting at around ten bucks a month, you truly get what you pay for. Many basic policies have high deductibles and cover only major accidents, such as your pet getting run over and needing life-saving surgery. If you want your pet insurance to cover vaccines, flea treatment, wellness care, hereditary illnesses, and things of this nature, you can find yourself paying anywhere from thirty to seventy five dollars a month for pet health insurance.
Worse still, many people only seek a pet health insurance policy when their animal is older and sick, which raises rates. Buying the policy when your pet is young and healthy can keep rates lower.
There is always a chance that your animal will never need coverage beyond traditional office visits, and this can make the expense seem worthless. But if you have a good policy and your beloved pet dog racks up a bill of thousands overnight at the vet when he or she gets cancer, gets into an accident, or needs surgery, pet health insurance can make the difference between making the life or death decision whether or not to treat your pet - a decision that no animal lover should ever have to make.
