It is a well-known fact that billions of dollars are spent in the pet industry each year. Not only do we first purchase our actual pets, from breeders and from animals shelters, but we also buy an enormous quantity of pet items from pet shops such as food, supplies, and gifts for these pets too.
One of the most unexpected costs associated with any pet, however, is a medical cost for a serious condition or accident. When we first acquire our pets, there is often no way to tell whether our new best friend is going to have some sort of medical problem that can lead to surgery or long-term treatment at the vet.
And just like human conditions, a pet’s condition may cost us dearly in the long run in terms of financial obligations. Here are the three most popular methods for dealing with large or unexpected vet's bills.
Method 1: Shop Around for Pet Insurance
Naturally, you will opt to have any reasonable medical treatment done, but this means you also have to find a way to pay for the work a vet performs on a pet. Such a medical cost may be far more than you can afford “out of pocket,” and this is where you will need to determine the best approach to payment.
A new method for covering an extremely expensive pet medical cost is to purchase some sort of pet health insurance. There are many major medical care insurance companies that offer such options to pet owners, and many of their policies are extremely reasonable.
For example, you may be able to find plans similar to those available for you or your family. There are the basic upkeep plans that help with regular checkups and any associated work. There are also the comprehensive plans that would pay for the hospital visits, surgeries, and extensive medication if required.
One quick way to find out the best options for pet health insurance is to speak directly with the manager at your veterinarian’s office to see which plans they accept.
Method 2: Financing Animal Care
Also like many human health payment options, there are financing plans available too. In fact, some health insurance financing groups provide accounts strictly designed for things like human dental work as well as pet care plans.
This would be the same as taking a credit card offer and using it strictly for medical expenses not covered by a regular health insurance plan, but without the temptation of using the credit for other things too.
For example, a credit account meant for a pet’s healthcare would allow you to get approved for the maximum dollar amount and then use that funding for any of the animal’s medical treatments, regardless of their level of severity. This would be a good way to pay for a procedure for the animal and then to pay for the follow up treatments too.
Method 3: Start a Savings Plan for Pet Emergencies
Finally, the least preferable approach would be to regularly set aside money into a savings account for pet care. This is because it would prevent you from directing those funds into a more productive area. Instead of using money for a “what if” situation, you could be investing for retirement, your children's college future, etc.
Take a look at your financial situation before choosing the right approach to paying for pet medical care. You do have options, and you should talk to your vet to find out which of these plans is most suitable for you.
