Are Weights or Machines Better for Losing Weight?

List: Posted: 12/10/10

When you join a gym with the intention of losing weight, it's easy to become overwhelmed. After all, there are dozens of different machines, as well as a wide range of free weights. Which of these two groups is better for losing weight, and why?

Free weights are designed for building muscle strength and mass. While minor lifting can be a great way to build tone, they are not ideal for people looking solely to lose weight. Instead, using free weights can actually cause weight gain, although the weight will be in the form of healthy muscle tissue. If the number on the scale is the result you are looking for rather than the level of muscle mass, then machines might be a better choice.

When it comes to exercise machines, you will find all different sorts at most gyms. There are machines for cardio exercise, such as exercise bikes and treadmills, as well as machines for weight training. Finding machines that provide a largely cardiovascular workout and combining this with minimal weight training can be the best way to effectively lose weight.

Machines are probably ideal for losing weight, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t use free weights at all. Weight training is an excellent way to build better muscle tone. This can help keep your body leaner and more attractive, and can help strengthen ligaments and tendons that you use during weight loss exercises. With the right combination of exercise using both machines and free weights, you will get the results you need.
