How to Get Back Into Dating - a Guide For the Newly Divorced

If you’ve just gotten divorced, dating can seem very intimidating.  If you were married for a long time, the people you’ll find yourself dating may seem hard to relate to, as you’re accustomed to being romantic and spending time with someone you know very well and who knows you very well.  Don’t let this discourage you from dating and don’t for a moment think that being divorced makes you any less attractive.

Dating is a great way to get your emotions back in line.  It can take your focus off of the relationship that didn’t work and place it on the potential to be in a relationship that does work.

It’s important not to push yourself too hard when you start dating again, though.  Do it naturally and don't force yourself to date if you don't want to.  You can start by checking out your regular haunts such as the libraries, supermarkets and clubs in your area, or you can be bold and look for singles bars. 

If you’re an avid social networker, exploit those networks to meet new people.  If you really don't feel comfortable flirting with other people, getting some practice at it online to begin with is a great way to revitalize your dating life. 

There is no requirement to wait a specific amount of time before you can start dating again.  You can start dating a week after your divorce or wait for years, it’s entirely up to you.  Finding other divorced people who have started dating again is a good idea, as you’ll be able to relate to them in some regards. 

You’ll want to make sure, however, not to talk about your divorce too much with the new people you’re dating.  It makes it seem like you’re not really interested in them and like you’re still involved with your ex.
