Holistic medicine, called alternative medicine by some, is a different way of looking at the health and well-being of a patient. It looks at more than just the physical symptoms, unlike the doctors of Western medicine, and considers the spiritual and emotional aspects of health, as well.
It delves into the nutritional, environmental, social and lifestyle of the person being treated and seeks to heal all aspects of their condition. The goal is to achieve a healthy balance in all areas, which the practitioners hope will remedy the ailments.
In holistic medicine, the treatments are often herbal and are far healthier than many of the drugs used in other areas of medicine. For many, this is an ideal way to treat some of common health issues. However, even the practitioners realize that sometimes, their holistic approach isn't enough. They will still incorporate drugs and surgery if there is no other way of treating patients.
Why would someone choose to incorporate holistic medicine into their life rather than seeking the traditional help of a 'regular' doctor? For starters, the holistic approach is going to mean less medication. This is often a cheaper alternative that some people like. Another problem with traditional medicine is that they over-prescribe drugs and this can lead to a host of other problems such as sickness.
When going the holistic route, your body is not going to be subject to as many chemicals. The help that you receive through holistic healing is healthier and safer, at least in the opinion of its enthusiasts.
